Secondary containment is only effective when its concrete, joints, penetrations and protective lining remain intact. Cracks, spalling, exposed aggregate and failed coatings can create pathways through which spilled liquids may escape the containment area.

Underground pits operate in difficult conditions. Standing liquids, chemicals, impact, abrasion, freeze-thaw cycles and constant moisture can progressively damage the concrete. Coating failure may also conceal weak or contaminated material beneath the surface.

Secondary Containment Repair and Lining Process

The project scope is developed around the actual condition of the containment area and the substances it may need to hold. Work can include:

  2. Cleaning the pit or containment surface

  3. Removing failed coatings and unsound concrete

  4. Repairing cracks, voids, transitions and deteriorated sections

  5. Preparing the sound substrate for adhesion

  6. Trowel on lining system (chemically bonding reinforces polymer & epoxy concretes)

  7. Priming and applying the specified containment lining

  8. Inspecting accessible surfaces before return to service

Chemical-Resistant Containment Coatings

A secondary-containment coating must be selected for the anticipated spill exposure—not simply for colour or general durability. Chemical type, concentration, temperature, exposure time, substrate moisture and movement at joints all affect system selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a badly deteriorated concrete containment pit be restored?

Often it can, but loose and chemically damaged material must be removed until a sound substrate is reached. The required repair depth and lining specification depend on site conditions.

Do pits need to be cleaned before restoration?

Yes. Liquids, sludge, oils, salts and other contamination can prevent inspection and compromise adhesion. Cleaning is an important first stage of the restoration scope.

How is a containment lining selected?
